After Islamic State fighters swept through northwestern Iraq in July, the Kurds took control of Kirkuk, a city with the second-largest oil deposits in the country of Iraq. Kurds believe that, after the eventual end of the conflict with IS, international buyers will need Kurdish crude and will support their nationalist aspirations. Compared to the rest of Iraq, Kurdistan is a landscape of success due to their oil revenue and distance from conflict in the past 10 years. (NOOR, grf)
