The first round of the 2017 French presidential election will be held on 23 April 2017. Should no candidate win a majority, a run-off election between the top two candidates will be held on 7 May 2017. Incumbent president François Hollande of the Socialist Party is eligible to run for a second term, but declared on 1 December 2016 that he would not seek reelection in light of low approval ratings, becoming the first incumbent president of the Fifth Republic not to run for a second term. The presidential election will be followed by legislative elections to elect members of the National Assembly on 11 and 18 June. (wp)
