World Press Photo of the Year 2014 by Mads Nissen, Denmark |  Scanpix / Panos Pictures

The winners of the competition World Press Photo 15 have been announced. The prize for the World Press Photo of the Year 2014 goes to the Danish photographer Mads Nissen, a photographer of the newspaper «Politiken», represented by Panos Pictures.

The picture shows Jon and Alex, a homosexual couple, during an intimate moment in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Life for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual people (LGBT) is becoming more and more difficult in Russia: Sexual minorities are subjected to harassment, legal and social discrimination and/or even violent hate crimes from conservative, religious and nationalist circles. The World Press Photo of the Year 2014, which has also won the first prize in the «Contemporary Issues» category, is part of Mads Nissen’s comprehensive project «Homophobia in Russia» on behalf of Scanpix.

From 97’912 entries which were submitted by 5’692 photographers from 131 different countries an international panel of 17 jurors awarded prizes to the best work in 8 categories. The US American Michelle McNally, jury chair and director of photography and assistant managing editor of «The New York Times», explains the choice as follows:  «It’s a historic moment for the picture… The winning picture must be aesthetic and significant and at the same time have the potential to achieve iconic status. This picture is aesthetic, powerful and shows humanity. »
