The Syrian refugee family Jneid mourns their youngest child - Photo by Yvain Genevay

The photographer Yvain Genevay from the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland, was elected Swiss photographer of the year. He won the main prize «Swiss Press Photo» for his image series of a mourning Syrian refugee family in the category current affairs.

The choice couldn’t have been easy for the international jury: 221 photographers sent in a total of 3147 images.

The case of the Syrian family hit the headlines last summer. The pregnant woman suffered a miscarriage after the Swiss authorities deported the family to Italy. The family blames the Swiss border guards for not having received the help they needed. As a result, the military justice initiated an investigation. Genevay’s images were created after the tragic event occurred. They show the mourning family and the grave of the child and were published in the newspaper "Le Matin Dimanche" in the French-speaking part of Switzerland.

The award «Swiss Press Photo» in the category everday life was won by Stephanie Borcard and Nicolas Metraux, the category Swiss reportages by Helmut Wachter, the category portrait by Flavia Leuenberger, the category sport by Annick Ramp and the category foreign countries by Jean Revillard. Congratulations!
