“A year ago, I was in Dublin for the football friendly between Switzerland and the Republic of Ireland. There was a 50,000-strong crowd in the stadium and I was all fired up to photograph the Swiss taking their opponents by storm. But then I was just directed to a seat: “Sorry Sir, you go left!”. So, there I am, sitting in completely the wrong place – looking towards the Switzerland goal. One minute in, though, Ireland score their 1:0 winning goal and I get the perfect image! No other photographer had it so good. The photo appeared in numerous newspapers, from the Swiss Tages-Anzeiger to The Times – it was the image of the match.”

For 30 years, photographer Walter Bieri has been in constant demand with the KEYSTONE photography agency. In between assignments, he is busy exploring and discovering timeless themes. Bieri is one of the most versatile talents in the profession. In a glowing portrait by journalist Roger Anderegg in Schweizer Journalist 06-07 / 2017, “powerhouse” Walter Bieri talks about how he works and what drives him«. Download PDF.
