An image by Turkish photographer Burhan Ozbilici has been selected World Press Photo of the Year. The picture shows the assassination of Andrey Karlov, Russian ambassador to Turkey, by Mevlüt Mert Altintas, a 22-year-old off-duty police officer, in an art gallery in Ankara, Turkey, on December 19, 2016. Altintas wounded three other people before the police killed him.

Burhan Ozbilici is a staff photographer for the Associated Press in Istanbul. With this image, he also won the first prize in the «Spot News Stories» category.

The independent, international jury of 2017, chaired by Stuart Franklin, Magnum photographer and professor of documentary photography, has awarded the best images in the categories «General News», «Spot News», «Sports», «Contemporary Issues», «Daily Life», «People», «Nature» and «Long-Term Projects» from 80‘408 entries, submitted by 5‘034 photographers from 125 countries. The World Press Photo Foundation in Amsterdam organizes the world’s largest annual competition for press photography and is considered one of the most important awards in photojournalism as well as for multimedia storytelling for the past seven years.

The US-American Mary F. Calvert, member of the jury and independent photographer, said of the World Press Photo of the Year: «It was a very very difficult decision, but in the end we felt that the picture of the Year was an explosive image that really spoke to the hatred of our times. Every time it came on the screen you almost had to move back because it such an explosive image and we really felt that it epitomizes the definition of what the World Press Photo of the Year is and means.»

The exhibition will be travelling to more than a 100 cities in 45 countries worldwide. After 10 years, the Zurich World Press Photo exhibition will be presented in a different location and in a new constellation: the Swiss National Museum will be showing the World Press Photo 17 in collaboration with KEYSTONE from May 10 to June 11, 2017.
